Meeting Minutes and Notes :

Hi team – We had another strong meeting Tuesday night, with 13 members and a visit from area governor John Bate. Anna led us though a challenging series of “spin doctoring” Table Topics questions in which we were prompted to find the good news in a variety of challenging situations.

Santiago provided interesting details about blue whales, the largest animal in history. He skillfully blended facts (newborn whales gain 200 pounds a day) with good comparisons (a blue whale heart is the size of a Volkswagen) to provide a detailed picture in our minds.

Area governor John Bate talked briefly about the recent fall district conference, and encouraged us to attend the spring conference in May. If you register by Friday, you get the lowest price. More details here: http://www.district53toastmasters.org/index.php/conference

Isabel passed out information about meeting roles, and highlighted speech evaluators and toastmasters. Nancy suggested we create a buddy system to help first-time toastmasters run a meeting.

General evaluator Anne Mulligan led an evaluation team that included Rita as speech evaluator, Nancy as grammarian and Gene as timer.

Kim announced she is starting nursing school, and has to step aside as VP membership. We wish her all the best, and know that her energy and enthusiasm are going to serve her and her patients well.

Meeting Minutes and Notes :

Kathy Marshall, our Table topics master did a great job with our theme – “A Night at the Movies” Kathy asked us about “Show me the Money”, “Greed is Good”, what kind of snacks do you like at movies, and the use of profanity in movies. Kathy’s questions were very insightful and very well researched. It was Kathy’s first time as a Table Topics Master and did she deliver. Nice job Kathy- thank you.

Then we started off with our prepared speeches with Laurie Judge telling us about “Fear”. Laurie had a great speech and then ended it with a few quotes. My favorite FDR ‘the only thing we have to fear is fear itself’ Nice job Laurie.

We changed it up a bit, Anne Mulligan evaluated Laurie right after her speech because Laurie had to leave a little early. Anne did a great job on a very short time space. Thank you Anne.

Next Anna Sidorova dazzled us with her Visual Aids in her speech “The Gift”. Anna told us about a map, a compass, and a shovel however there was no buried treasure. Anna was given a Douglas Fir tree as a gift and planted the tree herself – the tree is still growing in Russia. Very nice speech Anna as always very well organized and thought out.

Dave Pelland then had us thinking about George Lucas and the alien adventure that he must have been apart of. Dave wonders how you can made two great movies – Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and then follow these movies with absolute excrement (I think that is the word Dave used) I have also wondered this myself. Dave has finally solved it. Dave, you should get a government grant and have the folks from CSI to investigate this theory.

After these three great speeches we followed it up with two evaluators (yes just two) Anne went first before the second speaker for those of you watching from home.

Santiago evaluated Anna and Mark evaluated Dave. Both had some usefull points to give to their respective evaluatees.

We ended the meeting on the later side of 9 pm, with 15 attendees and three speakers we had to go a little long.

Thanks to you all and have a great Thanksgiving.
